7 Rules of AI Fluency

AI tools change every day.

But the way you think, judge, question, learn and make decisions does not.

Because people change slowly, the training pedagogy of Human Savvy reflects the way people learn. It's baked into the 7 Rules of AI Fluency — durable ways of working with AI that add value for you regardless of which tool, version, or feature is hot today.

These are not prompt tricks. They’re human habits for using AI with greater clarity, efficiency and judgment.

1.
Use AI Ethically

Security. Environment. Community. Just because AI can do it does not mean you should.

Using AI well means thinking beyond the immediate result. Consider what information you’re sharing, where that information may go, what resources are being consumed, and what impact your use of AI may have on other people. Capability is not the same thing as permission.

2.
Stop Starting Over

Treat your AI work as a continually improving process instead of a series of one-off tasks.

A single AI answer can be useful. But the real gains are cumulative.

Give AI access to the right context, sources, examples and previous decisions so you build on what already exists instead of re-explaining the same problem every time.

3.
Kill Context Shifts

Every handoff among tools, formats, apps and mental modes leaks value.

Progress slows every time you pause, search, copy, paste, reformat, re-explain or switch environments.

Reduce or eliminate those gaps.

Avoid being a slow adapter between your tools and your knowledgebase. Speaking is faster than typing. Remove speed bumps between your thinking and your outcomes.

4.
Ask Better Questions

Better answers come from more detailed questions.

AI provides mediocre responses to average instructions.

Give it context. Add constraints. Define the audience. Explain the goal. Set a timeline. Describe what success looks like.

Better input gives AI something meaningful to work with.

5.
Raise the Floor

Improve your weaknesses before optimizing your strengths.

AI struggles to improve upon excellence.

So use it to compensate for weaknesses, handle repetitive work, fill knowledge gaps and help you perform more consistently.

Don’t just use AI to make your best work slightly better. Use AI to make your weakest work much stronger.

6.
Trust but Verify

Know enough to know when AI is wrong.

AI sounds confident even when it's wrong.

Fluency requires judgment.

Question, challenge, test and compare answers.

Outside your area of expertise, be especially careful accepting a convincing answer.

AI can accelerate your thinking but don't let it replace your judgement.

7.
Teach It Back

Maintain mastery through sharing.

AI accelerates your workflow.

That creates the risk of arriving at conclusions you can't explain.

So teach it back: explain the reasoning to a colleague. Defend the conclusion. Walk someone through it.

If you can teach, you still understand it.

If you can’t, AI took you somewhere you can't explain.

Because 7 is easier for a human to recall than 8.

AI fluency is a human skill

The 7 Rules of AI Fluency are deliberately agnostic to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any AI platform.

  • Tools will change
  • Features will disappear
  • Models will improve

Your durable advantage is knowing how to think and work effectively with whichever tools you have at the moment.

That kind of training is Human Savvy.
